I put the magazine down, by the side of the bed, waiting for the painkiller to do its work, waiting to turn the corner. The walk up the hill will make me feel better. It always does. I’m stressed, and stress makes you ill. I’m middle-aged, and middle age makes you ill. In their book Why Do People Get Ill?, which I can see on the shelf by the side of my bed, medical authors Darian Leader and David Corfield give an interesting answer.

Why do people get ill? It’s not just germs or viruses, they say. That’s because you’ve always got germs and viruses in you. Being ill is not about the sudden appearance of outside attackers. It is more about the appearance of chinks in your defensive armour.

In other words, first you become ill, and then the germs or viruses attack you.

By the time they attack you, you are already ill.
